SPEEA Cares fund provides emergency assistance for members and their families who are facing difficulties due to layoffs or other issues.

For approved requests, the fund pays up to $500 for a one-time-only bill related to housing or utilities and can also provide a gas or grocery gift card.

SPEEA staff forward eligible requests to the Puget Sound Labor Agency (PSLA). This tax-exempt 501 c (3) non-profit organization arranges for direct payment of the bill to the appropriate creditor or utility.

The fund started during the SPEEA 40-day strike of 2000 thanks to the generosity of SPEEA members from all of our bargaining units, as well as other labor unions contributing to a strike-relief fund for members’ emergencies. The money left over after the strike went into the SPEEA Cares fund to help laid-off members, particularly following 9/11 layoffs of 2001.

Since starting the fund nine years ago, SPEEA Cares issued more than 4,000 checks. About 60% of the total were in the first year and were mostly strike-related. 

SPEEA members continue to contribute through ECF or cash donations to keep the fund going.
